A typical classroom visit with Cheryl (45 minutes) includes:
- Cheryl's short personal introduction to students noting her childhood experiences growing up in Virginia, and an explanation of how she became an author and publisher of children's books.
- A Read Aloud from two of Cheryl's books (Bright Eyes Brown Skin and one other title, perhaps My Friend Maya Loves to Dance or Clothes I Love to Wear.) Children are engaged in call and response participation for Bright Eyes, Brown Skin and also in getting children to remember and recite familiar nursery rhymes with alternative endings for Many Colors of Mother Goose. Read Aloud choices are age and grade appropriate.
- A Powerpoint presentation with music is provided for children to participate in role-playing for My Friend Maya Loves to Dance. Cheryl brings simple props for this activity as a means of engaging children in listening to different types of music and expressing different types of dance.
- Students are shown how to make their own 8 page mini-book (complete with cover, copyright information, text and illustration) from one sheet of paper provided as a template designed by Cheryl for this purpose.
- By the end of the session, students have a means of "sharing their own story" and are invited to share in a Q & A session with the author.
- Cheryl provides handouts for the teacher and bookmarks for the children and an opportunity to have books personally autographed.
Workshops and presentations may be tailored to meet specific needs and interests or age groups of the audience.
